By Air
Flights to Gilgit-Baltistan are available from Islamabad to Gilgit and Skardu, with travel times ranging from 1 to 1.5 hours depending on the destination. Flights offer a scenic and efficient way to reach the region, particularly for those who want to avoid the long journey by road. However, flights can be subject to weather conditions, especially during the winter months when fog and snow can disrupt schedules. During peak tourist seasons (spring to autumn), flights are more frequent, but availability can still be limited, so booking in advance is recommended.
By Road
Road travel is a more flexible way to explore Gilgit-Baltistan, and the journey times vary depending on your starting point and destination. The Karakoram Highway (KKH) is the main route that connects Islamabad to Gilgit-Baltistan, and it takes around 12 to 14 hours to travel from Islamabad to Gilgit by bus or car. From Gilgit to Hunza, it’s a further 2 to 3 hours by road, and from Gilgit to Skardu, the drive is about 6 to 7 hours. The road conditions along the KKH can be challenging in certain areas, especially in remote regions, and travel times may vary depending on weather, roadblocks, or landslides. If you are traveling by jeep to explore more isolated areas, like Fairy Meadows or Deosai National Park, expect longer travel times due to the rough, mountainous terrain. Nonetheless, the journey by road offers a chance to experience the stunning landscapes of Gilgit-Baltistan and is one of the most scenic drives in the world.
