Shandur Pass
A twisting road of 61 km from Gupis valley passing through lush green fields and forests with a view of the flowing river and icy peaks will lead the tourists to this charming valley. From springs of crystal clear waters to lakes and rivers of deep blue water, there are all colors of natural beauty in Phandar Valley.
Shandur Pass is accessible by road, but the journey can be quite long and challenging, especially in the winter months when roads may be closed due to snow. Here’s how you can get there:
- By road: From Gilgit, you can drive through the Ghizer Valley towards Phandar and continue onwards to Shandur. The road from Gilgit to Shandur is about 200 km (124 miles) and takes around 6 to 8 hours by car, depending on the road conditions.
- From Chitral: The road to Shandur from Chitral is about 170 km (106 miles) and takes approximately 5 to 7 hours. Travelers from Chitral can drive through Rumbur Valley and Bumburate before reaching Shandur.
- Best time to visit: The roads are mostly open between June and September when the weather is more stable. During the winter months (October-May), the roads are often blocked due to heavy snowfall, and access becomes difficult.
The Shandur Polo Festival is one of the biggest annual events at Shandur Pass, attracting tourists from around the world. The festival takes place each year in July and features an exciting polo tournament played between teams from Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral.
The best time to visit Shandur Pass is during the summer months, specifically from June to September. The weather is relatively milder, and the roads are open, making it easier to reach the pass. The Shandur Polo Festival typically occurs in July, so visiting during this time gives you the chance to experience the excitement and cultural festivities surrounding the event.
Winter (October to March): The pass becomes inaccessible due to heavy snowfall, and the weather is harsh. Roads are often closed, and temperatures can drop significantly.
Spring (April to May) and Autumn (September): These transitional seasons can also be good for visiting, though there may still be some snow and cold weather, especially at the top.
